Doctrines & Morals

Holy Spirit the Advocate
By Rev. Fr. Andrew Toye

In the three readings we experienced how the Holy Spirit, the advocate comes to our aid and helps us understand things and events about Jesus’ paschal mystery which we find difficult to comprehend. Through the aid of the Holy Spirit Peter was bold enough to address the people as well as school them about the life of Jesus, and enlighten them about the plan of God the Father to help us gain salvation through their/our mistake (sin). In the second reading likewise, St John reminds us of the need to seek the assistance of the advocate to have our sins forgiven, love God and keep/ obey the Lord’s commandments. The gospel on the other hand highlights for us how the apostles were able to recognise Christ at the breaking of the bread and while he was among them. The Holy Spirit still works among us only if we dispose and surrender ourselves to be engulfed by his power, then shall we truly repent and have our sins forgiven.

Prayer: Help us Lord to recognize the work of the Holy Spirit around, within and inside us, that we may truly believe, repent and be saved. Amen.
