Ora et Labora – Pray And Work
By Religious

Our reflection today will be on St. Benedict whose memorial we celebrate. His motto is “pray and work.” Born of  noble parents in the small town of Norsia Umbria (Italy), St Benedict spent his youth in Rome but the dissolute lives of his fellow students and sadly discovered state of the country then, prompted him at age 16 to give up everything and to seek salvation as a lone hermit in a hidden cave. After few years during which he matured rapidly in mind and character, reports of his sanctity, his miracles and gifts of directing souls attracted more and more earnest disciples and these he organized into monasteries. These men known as monks must be laboring under obedience and be brought back to God from whom they have drifted by the idleness of disobedience. Though not a priest himself, his order has given the church no less than 24 Popes, 4,600 Bishops and 5,000 saints. We are called to emulate the motto of St. Benedict- “Pray and work.”

Prayer: Lord, give us the wisdom to discover you like St Benedict, the knowledge to understand you, the diligence to seek after you, the patience to wait for you. Amen
