Oftentimes, many Catholics believe that it is the duty of the priests and religious or consecrated persons to evangelize. On the contrary, we must note that whereas some go to the mission by giving, others give by going; in all, everyone participates in the missionary mandate of the Church. The Church is missionary by nature and it is our duty as members of Christ’s faithful to carry it out. St. Paul gives us the way in; he teaches us that the duty to evangelize the world is a duty that has been laid on us. We did not choose this duty but it was conferred on us by virtue of our baptism. We have, like the apostles, received the commission from the Lord: “Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation. This duty is for us, we must carry it out. This is the point: you are important and the Lord needs you in this all important duty of the Church. You belong to the body of Christ the Church, you believe in the Church and that comes the responsibility of professing what we believe. To isolate oneself from this duty is to be shy of the Church and ultimately shy about the Lord Jesus. Therefore make the commitment today to play your role in the Church and do it gladly.
Prayer: Father, grant that I may see my role in the missionary duty of the Church. Amen.
