The Child Jesus
By Rev. Fr. Vincent Chukwujekwu

Children are gift from the Lord and so giving birth is mysterious as it is seen as God favouring his people. The presence of sterility was regarded as a divine disfavour. If a child was conceived in very unlikely circumstances, that was a clear sign of God’s intervention. The readings today show two very clear cases of God’s presence in people’s lives. Hannah is childless and in answer to her prayer and vow to dedicate her child to Yahweh, she gives birth to Samuel. The child was born with his religious mission already determined. Elizabeth was sterile and very advanced in age. An Angel appears to her husband and promises a child, which eventually is born. But all these redirect our focus to the mysterious birth of Jesus, the only child of Mary. In examples given above it was a clear sign of God being with the children but our later realization would be that God is not only with this child but that the child is God incarnate.

Preyed: Lord, make us able to recognize the child Jesus in our daily lives. Amen
