Doctrines & Morals

The Beloved
By Rev. Fr. Francis Babatunde

Today we celebrate the feast of St. John who was one of the disciples that enjoyed a special privilege from Jesus Christ, he was among the inner circle disciples of Jesus (with Peter and James). He had a special place in the apostolic college. He is described as ‘the disciple whom Jesus loved’. He is one of the three who witnessed the raising to life of the daughter of Jarius, the Transfiguration and Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was the last of the disciple to die. He lived to a very old age. It is said that in his old age John never changed the topic of his sermons and always limited them to a single phrase: “My dear little children: love one another”. The Lord gave to this great apostle who we celebrate three things: first, he gave John his heart by allowing him to rest his head on his chest; second, he gave him his passion by calling him alone of all the other Apostles to witness to the drama of Calvary; and finally, he gave him a mother, his own mother. The heart of Jesus, the Cross and the Virgin Mary are indeed the triple gifts which Jesus gives to the chosen ones. John enjoyed a special intimacy with Jesus and Mary.

Prayer: Lord God, help us to cultivate a special intimacy with Jesus and Mary. Amen.
