Feast of the Holy Innocents
By Rev. Fr. PaulMary Taiwo Otukpe

Killing of the defenseless is one of the sins seeking vengeance from God. Today, our gospel reading presents to us the killing of the innocent male children in Bethlehem as ordered by King Herod all for the sake of Christ. In the Old Testament (Exodus 1:16), we see the massacre of male Hebrew children and how Moses was divinely rescued and became the Saviour of the Israelites then. Today, we are presented with the New Testament massacre of the Holy Innocents because of the birth of Jesus. Today, there are many Herods in the world, they are not far from us. Anywhere power is seen and used as a means of domination, to raise one’s status or right to rule until death. The worst attitude of Herod was his tendency to see threats everywhere, even in harmless people, leading to the destruction of (harmless) innocent babies. Do you see any gifted or prospective person around you as a threat? Then you are not far from being another Herod because this tendency itself can bring death. Today’s feast also calls us to think of those unborn children, completely defenseless, victims of abortion. It may not be right to identify Pharaoh or Herod to be pro-abortion because they may have acted in ignorance, yet we should never be in support of abortion or any act that terminates life, instead be pro-life.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to be a promoter of your peace. May I welcome you into my life and be a source of your blessing to others. Amen.
