His Grace, Most Reverend Alfred A. Martins, the Archbishop of Lagos and the Priests in the Archdiocese urges everyone to join them for the 2015 Chrism Mass.
Holy Thursday is a day we celebrate two important events: the Chrism Mass and the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. At the Chrism Mass which takes place in the morning, the Bishop surrounded by his Priests, consecrate the Chrism oil and bless the oils of the Sick and Catechumens to be used at all the Baptisms, Confirmations, Anointing of the Sick and Ordinations in the Local Church throughout the year. With these sacred oils we are anointed and consecrated to Jesus the anointed One and sealed to one another in the Church. This celebration reminds us that all the Sacraments and Sacramentals draw their power from the mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection. Also, all priests renew their commitment to priestly service on this day. This renewal offers every priest the opportunity to reflect on the mystery of the priesthood and reminds the lay faithful and indeed everyone of their duty to pray for their priests.
The second and most significant event is the Mass of the Lord’s Supper which takes place in the evening. At the Lord’s Supper, Jesus instituted the Eucharist and the Sacred Priesthood. In the Eucharist Jesus gives himself to us to strengthen us in our weakness, to accompany us in our lowliness, and as a foretaste of Heaven itself. By instituting the Priesthood, Jesus gave his Apostles and their successors the power to celebrate the Eucharist until the end of time: “Do this in Memory of me.” (cf. Luke 22:19, 1Cor. 11:24).
