The season of Christmas is marked by the spirit of giving gifts to friends and loved ones. In today’s Gospel, Mary visits Elizabeth but it is not recorded that she brought any gifts (even though it is very possible that she did). However, the one thing we are crystal sure she brought was herself. She gave Elizabeth the gift of her very presence. This is the best and the toughest of all gifts. Anyone can get into the shop to get flowers and other beautiful parcels with ease to give out to dear ones. But to give the gift of oneself or to make out the time to be with somebody, that is the gift that many people long for but do not receive at Christmas. Taking a cue from Mary’s action, we must, in addition to the florets and packages, give of ourselves, our presence, and our time. Give it a trial: find time to visit and be with people, this is the greatest gift because it is invaluable.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to understand the need of others and be present to them in those times that I may be your instrument to bring your help. Amen.
