If a question is asked; why do we go to church? Different responses may come up, such as; we come to church to pray. Others may answer; we come to church to listen to the word of God. Still others may answer; we come to church to hear mass or to receive Holy Communion. No doubt, all of these responses are good responses, but there is an even better answer and that is; we come to church that we may go out of the church to preach the Good News. This is exactly what our Lord tells us in the gospel reading of today: “Go into the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation” (Mk 16:15). Mary Magdalene after her encounter went and told those who had been with him that Jesus was alive and was seen by her. The two disciples on the way to Emmaus went back and told the rest that they had seen the Lord. And when finally he appeared to the eleven, He explicitly told them “Go into the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. At the end of the Mass, when the priest says: “Go in peace the Mass is ended” or “Go in peace and announce the gospel” it is a call to go and make difference in the world by making Christ known, not just by words but more importantly by action.
Prayer: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace! Amen
