Something greater than the Sabbath is here. The Sabbath is a day of worship. They were not to do work on the Sabbath day. The one who is worshipped on the Sabbath day, that is God, is greater than the Sabbath. Jesus, the Son of God, the word made flesh is God and so he is greater than Sabbath. He is Lord of the Sabbath. The worshipper or worship itself cannot be more important or greater than the one who is worshipped. Jesus by his actions emphasizes the fact that the laws of Sabbath should be at the service of men not men at the service of the law. There is no law without exception. Exception must be given for the common good and for the glorification of God. The laws we make must bear human face; it should not make life more difficult. If our laws do not take into consideration the good of human beings first than it is not a good law. What Jesus did was not wrong, being God, he knows better than those who put the laws together as such he alone can give the most accurate interpretation of the law. Every law must wear the face of mercy. Exceptions should be given when necessary. By so doing laws will be seen to be made for human beings and not human beings for the law.
