The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos is poised to host a historic celebration in honour of one of Nigeria’s most respected religious leaders, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, Archbishop Emeritus whose life and ministry have shaped the Church and influenced national discourse for more than six decades.
The former Archbishop of Lagos will be celebrated for three landmark achievements: his 90th birthday on June 16, 2026, his 60th anniversary as a priest, and his 55th anniversary in the episcopacy.
In recognition of the rare milestones, the Archdiocese has planned a grand thanksgiving celebration on June 16, bringing together Church leaders, government officials, traditional rulers, captains of industry and admirers of the Cardinal from across Nigeria and beyond.
The day’s activities will commence with a Solemn Thanksgiving Mass at Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos, followed by a reception at The Hall, Victoria Island.
Announcing the programme, the Chairman and Secretary of the Archdiocesan All-Purpose Committee, Rt. Hon. Chev. Peter Nwanze and Very Rev. Fr. Julius Olaitan, described the celebration as a fitting tribute to a Church statesman whose influence has transcended the pulpit and resonated across the nation.

According to the committee, Cardinal Okogie’s life story is one of steadfast faith, sacrificial service and courageous leadership. Throughout his priestly and episcopal ministry, he distinguished himself as a fearless defender of justice, an advocate for human dignity and a moral voice during some of Nigeria’s most turbulent moments.
The committee noted that his contributions have left an enduring legacy on both the Catholic Church and the wider society, earning him admiration across religious, political and social divides.
For many Nigerians, Cardinal Okogie remains a towering figure whose forthright interventions on national issues helped shape public debate and challenge injustice. His commitment to truth, pastoral care and the welfare of the ordinary citizen established him as one of the most influential Catholic leaders of his generation.
Reflecting the values that have defined his ministry, the Archdiocese has also incorporated a major humanitarian outreach into the celebrations. The initiative is aimed at extending support to the poor and vulnerable, a cause that has remained close to the Cardinal’s heart throughout his years of service.
As preparations gather momentum, the celebration is expected to be more than a commemoration of age and years in ministry. It will serve as a national tribute to a cleric whose voice, witness and leadership have inspired generations and whose legacy continues to illuminate the path of faith, justice and service in Nigeria.
At 90, Cardinal Okogie remains a symbol of courage, integrity and unwavering commitment to God and humanity—qualities that have earned him a permanent place in the history of the Church and the nation.
