The Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos, Most Rev. (Dr.) Alfred Adewale Martins, has described the late Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, as “a unique Shepherd” whose life was marked by faithful service to God, the Church and humanity.
Announcing the Archbishop’s death in a circular issued on Friday, July 10, Archbishop Martins said he received the news “with heavy heart but with strong faith in Christ and hope in the resurrection of the body.”
Although saddened by the loss, he reminded Catholics that Christian hope is rooted in Christ’s victory over death.

Archbishop Akubeze was ordained a priest on October 3, 1987, appointed pioneer Bishop of Uromi Diocese in December 2005 and consecrated bishop in February 2006. He became Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City in March 2011 and served until his death.
Beyond his pastoral ministry, he played a significant national role, serving as Vice President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) from 2012 to 2018 and President from 2018 to 2022. During his tenure, he consistently spoke on issues of national unity, security, justice, religious freedom, good governance and the dignity of the human person.
Archbishop Martins called on priests, religious and lay faithful to offer Holy Masses for the repose of Archbishop Akubeze’s soul and to pray for the Archdiocese of Benin City and his family.
“May God grant him eternal rest and joy among the blessed.”
Archbishop Akubeze’s death has since attracted an outpouring of tributes from bishops, priests, religious and lay faithful across Nigeria and beyond, with many remembering him as a compassionate shepherd, fearless defender of truth and humble servant of God whose legacy of faith, pastoral care and courageous witness will continue to inspire generations.
