From the Archbishopric: Reject ‘Judas Spirit’, Embrace Truth and Justice

As we listen to the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ on this Palm Sunday, we are confronted with a painful but truthful mirror of our own society. The story of betrayal, de nial, injustice and suffering is not far removed from our daily experience here in Nigeria. Judas betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Today, how often do we see conscience traded for money? In our public life, corruption continues to wound our nation as some sacrifice the common good for personal gain. Like Judas, many know the truth, yet choose compromise.

This reading calls us to examine ourselves: what price do we place on integrity? Peter, out of fear, denied Christ three times. In Nigeria today, fear silences many good people. Fear of losing jobs, fear of persecution, fear of standing alone. Yet the Gospel chal lenges us to be courageous witnesses, even when it is inconvenient or costly. We also see false accusations, ma nipulation of justice, and the crowd choosing Barabbas over Jesus. Is this not similar to situations where truth is suppressed and justice is delayed or denied? When innocent people suffer while the guilty walk free, the Passion is relived in our land.

Yet, in all these, Christ remains steadfast. In the face of suffering, He chooses obedience to the will of the Father. He rejects violence and embraces sacrifice. This is the path He sets before us: not revenge, but right eousness; not despair, but hope. As Nigeria faces insecurity, econom ic hardship, and moral challenges, the Passion reminds us that suffering does not have the final word. The Cross leads to Resurrection. T herefore, let us reject betrayal, overcome fear, stand for truth, and  work for justice. If we remain faithful, even in trials, God will bring renewal to our nation. May this Holy Week deepen our conversion and strengthen our hope in Christ our Redeemer. Amen.
